Standard requirements for manufacturing positions
Most manufacturing positions at Proto Labs require employees to either sit or stand for most or all of their shift, lift up to 70 pounds waist high and carry up to 70 pounds. Other requirements include the ability to reach, bend, grasp, use a computer, read and write in English, do basic math and work safely with sharp and heavy objects. Attention to detail and commitment to high performance and continuous improvement is important for every position at Proto Labs.
Finishing Operator
This is an entry level position responsible for trimming plastic parts to customer specifications, counting, weighing and packaging parts. Finishing operators must be able to view and enter data on the computer and will be trained to operate hand and power tools such as knives, pliers, band saws, grinders and sanders.
Build Technician
This position will polish and assemble injection molds. The build technician will be trained to have basic injection mold preparation skills such as de-burring, drilling and tapping, grinding, cutting and drilling. This position requires mechanical aptitude. Experience using power tools in a metal working shop, including a drill press, is preferred as is experience with measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers and height gauges.
Milling Operator
The milling operator sets up, operates and troubleshoots CNC milling machines. This includes loading materials, molds and/or tools into the machines as well as cleaning and maintaining the machines and tools. Experience using measuring instruments such as scales, calipers and dial indicators, and a post-high-school education in machine trades is preferred for this position.
Material Control
In material control, employees track and prepare material for use in the injection molding process. Primary duties include retrieving, weighing, tracking inventory and storing materials; calculating material discrepancies; preparing and staging materials; and cleaning and loading dryers. Inventory control experience is preferred for this position.
Mold Process Technician
The mold process technician is responsible for setting up and processing injection molding orders. Experience in first-time mold processing and sampling is required. Technicians will also load materials into the machines, inspect sample parts for accuracy, troubleshoot and correct problems at the press.
