If you didn’t attend Autodesk University this week in Las Vegas, here is one big item you missed. Autodesk announced the launch of Forge, a $100-million investment fund to support the creation of a cloud-based platform that will connect design and manufacturing ecosystems in an effort to help developers bring new ideas to market faster and more often. We at Proto Labs are excited to be one of Forge’s inaugural partners in this effort.
As a result, Autodesk Fusion 360 users now have seamless access to our design for manufacturing analysis and web-based, interactive quoting right from Fusion 360 CAD program. “We are excited to bring this seamless quoting and ordering process to the Fusion 360 users and look forward to continued collaboration with Autodesk on the Forge platform,” said Rob Bodor, Proto Labs’ Vice President and General Manager, Americas.
Meanwhile, in the exhibitors’ area at Autodesk’s annual event, Proto Labs representatives talked with a variety of attendees, including electrical, civil and mechanical engineers and various educators (below).

Minnesota’s Lt. Governor, Tina Smith, and Proto Labs CEO, Vicki Holt, talk shop.
Proto Labs is at MD&M Minneapolis this week (Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 4-5) in conjunction with Minnesota Medtech Week. Stop by booth #327 to talk with manufacturing experts, learn about newly launched capabilities and, of course, see prototypes and parts in all shapes and sizes made by our 3D printing, CNC machining and injection molding services.
We kicked today off with a visit by Lt. Governor of Minnesota, Tina Smith, who met with Proto Labs CEO Vicki Holt to discussed the state of Manufacturing and Proto Labs’ efforts.
At this week’s show, we’re all about speed-to-market and reducing development time, so Proto Labs will be participating in the following two conference sessions:
- Our technical specialist, Tony Holtz, will be at the Tech Theater stage on Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m. talking about prototyping and low-volume production for medical applications. He’ll go in-depth on how to accelerate the development of medical devices and quickly launch products to market.
- Eric Utley (our expert on everything 3D printing) will also be participating on a panel discussion titled “Going Beyond Prototyping: Accelerating Regulatory Approval and Speed-to-Market” on Nov. 5 from 1 to 1:40 p.m. The group will evaluate common pre-development design failures, how to differentiate prototypes from final products, and tactics to better analyze the composition of prototypes versus final products.

See you there!
Proto Labs HQ is a little quieter than usual as we attend several trade shows this week. Here’s a quick look at where we’ll be:
Meet up with us at Booth 4419 at LIGHTFAIR
We were excited to make our debut at LIGHTFAIR on Tuesday at the Javits Center in New York. The international event, which runs through tomorrow afternoon, is the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference. It includes educational courses for attendees and offers them the opportunity to look at high-end designs and cutting-edge lighting technology. We’ll be at booth 4419 through the remainder of the show discussing our new optical liquid silicone rubber (LSR) material that benefits lighting applications. Continue reading
SXSW Interactive wraps up in Austin, Texas today and Proto Labs was proud to make our debut at the notoriously cool event — both as an exhibitor and attendee. Fittingly, we brought our Cool Idea! Award gallery to SX Create, a come one, come all event within the Interactive Festival that showcased innovative technologies and products that are shaping our future. Visitors to our space could check out a selection of previous Cool Idea! Award recipients to see how the inventive ideas went from concepts to actual products with a manufacturing hand from Proto Labs.
Our booth at SX Create showcased past Cool Idea! Award winners.
One of the many things SXSW is known for is its comprehensive music and film schedule where some tough decisions need to be made — the interactive counterpart is no different. By the time I finished plotting out my schedule, two hours had passed. Here are some session highlights: Continue reading
The Proto Labs team is ready to meet and greet folks at the trade show.
Well, a contender anyway. We are exhibiting at the Strategies in Light conference in Las Vegas this week (Feb. 24-26), one of the key LED and lighting events in North America. We are excited to meet with all of the design engineers and developers of LEDs and other lighting components. Continue reading
