California-based startup, Hush Technology, Inc., is the latest recipient of the Proto Labs Cool Idea! Award. Its product, Hush, is the world’s first smart earplug that combines sound-eliminating foam and noise masking technology to keep unwanted noise out while allowing important alerts in.

Hush helps users sleep through snoring, loud neighbors and a host of other noises that disturb nightly sleep. It connects via Bluetooth with a smartphone app so users can choose which notifications, including emergency calls and alarms, can get through to them during the night. The device includes a tiny speaker in its design that can play soft soothing sounds like white noise, ocean waves, and rain drops for over 10 hours.

“Hush’s ultimate goal is to help people sleep better in the context of others around them, and ultimately enable people to live a better quality of life,” says Daniel Lee of Hush Technology. “The world is only getting noisier, and we aim to provide a way for people to live together harmoniously despite this.”

Lee says Hush Technology will use the Cool Idea! Award grant to validate its design by using our additive manufacturing service for critical test samples and our injection molding service for the product’s initial run.

The company plans to launch Hush by late summer 2015 at a starting cost of $150. Learn more about Hush at hush.technology.
