Innovation, Inspiration and Creativity on Display at SXSW Interactive

SXSW Interactive wraps up in Austin, Texas today and Proto Labs was proud to make our debut at the notoriously cool event — both as an exhibitor and attendee. Fittingly, we brought our Cool Idea! Award gallery to SX Create, a come one, come all event within the Interactive Festival that showcased innovative technologies and products that are shaping our future. Visitors to our space could check out a selection of previous Cool Idea! Award recipients to see how the inventive ideas went from concepts to actual products with a manufacturing hand from Proto Labs.

Our booth at SX Create showcased past Cool Idea! Award winners.

One of the many things SXSW is known for is its comprehensive music and film schedule where some tough decisions need to be made — the interactive counterpart is no different. By the time I finished plotting out my schedule, two hours had passed. Here are some session highlights: Continue reading

Proto Labs Teams with SOLIDWORKS on New Initiative

If you’re not currently joining us at SOLIDWORKS WORLD (Feb. 8-11) in Phoenix, Arizona, you may not have heard about our exciting new partnership with the MySolidWorks Manufacturing Network. Created to connect SOLIDWORKS users with reliable manufacturers in the 3D printing, sheet metal, CNC machining and injection molding industry, the network provides users with quick access to manufacturing resources like Proto Labs that, in turn, have a direct link to more than 2.5 million SOLIDWORKS users. Once connected to Proto Labs, designers can upload a 3D CAD model and receive an interactive quote with manufacturability analysis within hours.

Proto Labs is handing out nickel-plated 3D-printed rings at SOLIDWORKS Works 2015, which were built using an advanced stereolithography process.

To celebrate the partnership, Proto Labs has manufactured a limited-edition 3D-printed ring that SOLIDWORKS WORLD attendees who visit either the Proto Labs or SOLIDWORKS booth have the opportunity to receive. The ring was manufactured using Proto Labs’ SLArmor process, which takes stereolithography — an additive technology that uses an ultraviolet laser to cure thousands of thin layers together to build complex objects — to the next level by plating it with a nickel coating. This provides the look, feel and strength of metal, but without the weight.

As we move into 2015, watch our blog feed for more information on new ventures that Proto Labs will be launching.

Medical Design & Manufacturing Expo: A Newcomer’s Perspective

I entered the bustling halls of the Minneapolis Convention Center in search of my first Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) Expo, a two-day event that brings medical device developers, part manufacturers, suppliers, packagers and others together to promote their capabilities and network with one another.

With an espresso firmly in hand, I made my way onto the convention floor, a wide-eyed virgin to manufacturing trade shows. Sure, I’ve been to car, truck and boat shows before, but never an industry trade show. Gone were bikini-clad models pitching luxury cars, replaced with automated robots offering Reese’s Pieces Halloween treats. Being a fan of both candy and robots, especially when paired together, my attention was immediately captured. Continue reading
