When building a part with 3D printing, the machine’s resolution strongly influences the final part by setting the minimum feature size, surface finish quality, and cost. To suit a range of part geometries, we offer stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing in three resolutions: normal, high, and micro. Most parts can be built in normal resolution, but for fine features around 0.1 mm, high resolution may be required.
For features as small as 0.07 mm, we offer micro resolution. Ultrafine details are produced with our proprietary material, MicroFine Green™. This thermoset resin builds parts in 0.025 mm layers. The maximum part size is 127 x 127 x 64 mm with very tight tolerances. Most parts built in MicroFine Green™ are no larger than 25 x 25 x 25 mm.
Have a part design that may require this level of resolution? Here is what to know if you are considering MicroFine Green™ for your next project.
Material Properties
As the name suggests, MicroFine Green™ is green in colour. Mechanically, it is fairly durable and rigid, with behaviour similar to ABS. Smaller features built in MicroFine Green™ are often more durable than comparable 3D printing materials. It is stiffer than Watershed, our clear microfluidic material, and fine features are more durable than polycarbonate-like materials such as Accura 5530. For a more detailed comparison of 3D printing materials, view this extensive guide.
Here is how MicroFine Green™ compares with other ABS-like materials used in SLA.
Applications
MicroFine Green™ is primarily used for rapid prototyping of parts with extremely fine features. The material is not durable enough for most end-use applications. Typical use cases include prototyping small components for medical devices and producing custom fixtures for researchers across a range of fields.
SLA Tech and Build Process
We produce MicroFine Green™ parts on modified 3D Systems Viper machines configured for micro resolution. In process controls are applied throughout the build, and post build quality inspections verify dimensional accuracy and part quality.
Post build processing is nearly identical to SLA parts made in other materials. Parts are cleaned with solvents and fully cured in a UV oven. We then remove support structures and sand the surfaces for a smooth finish. For standard finish parts, we grit blast. For very small parts, we may omit grit blasting if there is a risk of damage.
